Key Stage 4 Mathematics

GCSE

Students follow the Edexcel GCSE course, at either the Higher or Foundation level, starting in Year 10 and sitting the examination at the end of Year 11. The course specification changed in September 2015 to bridge the gap between A Level Mathematics and GCSE Mathematics.

What’s new?

  • The volume of subject content has increased and the weighting each domain receives has changed.
  • The demand of the content has also increased with harder topics being introduced, this is the case for both Foundation and Higher tiers.
  • The total time for the examinations has increased from 3.5 house to 4.5 hours.  Students now sit three 1.5 hour examinations.

In summary the course has become more demanding. In preparation for this, the Mathematics Department at DESC have tailored our curriculum at KS3 to prepare our students for the demands of GCSE.
