Learning Support and SEND
DESC has an ethos which promotes the inclusion of students and establishes the school’s long term direction for Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND). As a Department, we are committed to removing as many barriers to learning as we can, to encourage each student to achieve and feel valued.
The progress of students is carefully monitored and recorded, with consultation and feedback to parents being a vital and integral part of the learning process. We provide in-class support alongside teaching staff as well as small group withdrawal in the Learning Support Department to ensure that our students’ needs are met. In some instances, students may require the additional support of external agencies such as Educational Psychologists, in which case our team will liaise closely with professionals in the community.
All applications to DESC are dealt with individually and the Learning Support Team is closely involved in the admissions process. As part of this process, we keep a careful watch on the ratio of students with additional needs in each class and year group, to ensure a balance across the College.
As a College, we firmly believe in equality of opportunity for all students, irrespective of disability or personal circumstances. All students have an equal right to develop their skills and abilities. At DESC, we believe that no student should be disadvantaged in pursuing their education and aim to provide an inclusive system of support that helps nurture and empower every individual, so that our students become confident and independent learners.
