Students Performing at the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics World Games
It was a great privilege to be approached by the organisers of the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi and asked to sing as part of a 500 strong choir for the opening ceremony. Members of the Senior Choir at DESC saw this as a unique opportunity and jumped at the chance to share the platform with so many talented performers in sport, music, dance and creative art.
Rehearsals, led by Sam Wormald and supported by Andrew McIntosh were long and intense, but the enthusiasm of the students never wavered. Always smiling and helping the younger members of the other choirs, DESC took a lead role in teaching the other students the melody and harmony of the specially written song for the opening ceremony.
Nerves were running high on the actual event date, with the Royal Family looking on, as well as some of the world’s best and most determined athletes, but our Senior Choir members rose to the challenge and relished the experience. The opening ceremony was a celebration of all that is great about the UAE.
The event was live streamed on television and on our Facebook page. For those of you who did not manage to tune in – please see some of our own photographs from the event.
