Physical Education and House Sport
Sport and Physical Education is a huge part of life at the College with all students in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 having two PE lessons per week. Approximately 75% of students also choose to take part in sporting clubs outside of lesson times during the school year. House Sport takes place within PE lessons throughout the year, giving a large number of students a chance to represent their House in a range of activities, alongside the traditional House Swim Gala and House Sports Day. As well as the competitive interschool sports squads, there are also opportunities for students to develop their skills in specific clubs for non-squad members, recreational clubs and fitness sessions.
The College has a well deserved reputation for competitive sport and participates in a huge number of fixtures each year, with over 100 teams across a range of sports. The major sports at DESC are Rugby, Netball, Football and Swimming, which are supported by Specialist Directors in each sport and a specific development programme. The College also fields competitive teams in Athletics, Aquathon, Basketball, Cricket, Golf, Rounders, Running, Tennis and Water polo, which are supported by experienced and qualified coaches alongside our PE staff.
The full range of fixtures and results can be found on our sport website DESC Sport.
Sports Development Programmes
The College runs Sports Development Programmes in rugby, netball, football and swimming. Students selected to be on these programmes are withdrawn from lessons twice a week (on a rotation basis so that the same lesson is not missed more than once each term) to receive specialist coaching alongside their normal ECA and team coaching. They also receive specialist support in strength and conditioning and nutritional advice. Players from these programmes have represented the College to a high level with some moving on to international sport, professional clubs, academies and scholarships. We are developing further exit pathways in conjunction with a range of partners to enable students to develop from Year 7 to Year 13 and beyond.
