GCSE Physical Education

The new GCSE course builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills established in Key Stage 3 Physical Education. It gives students the opportunity to perform in both individual and team activities, promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. The course also builds on the knowledge and understanding students acquire during Key Stage 3 PE.


Course Structure

The course is delivered over two years, with two exam assessments at the end of the second year. The non-exam assessment (NEA) can take place at any time over the two years.

  • Applied anatomy and physiology
  • Movement analysis
  • Physical training
  • Use of data
  • Sport psychology
  • Socio-cultural influences
  • Health, fitness and well-being
  • Practical performance
  • Performance analysis and evaluation

Component 1: Fitness and Body Systems

Written examination: 1 hour and 45 minutes: 36% of the qualification 90 marks


Component 2: Health and Performance

Written examination: 1 hour and 15 minutes: 24% of the qualification 70 marks


Component 3: Practical Performance

NEA: internally marked and externally moderated: 30% of the qualification 90 marks (30 marks per activity)


Component 4: Personal Exercise Programme (PEP)

NEA: internally marked and externally moderated: 10% of the qualification 20 marks
