Creative Arts Faculty – What’s been happening?

The Creative Arts Faculty have been busy working with our DESC students participating in a range of creative pursuits.  Photography has been a massive growth area and we are proud of our new Photography studio in EG8.  Students can use this facility in lesson times, participate in the photography ECA (Wednesday) or use it for an EPQ study.  A range of specialist photographic equipment can be used to support the production of incredibly high quality lens-based images.

The Year 12 Photography students recently had the opportunity to explore both Dubai Creek Souk and the contrasting industrial Alserkal Avenue through the lens.  They were required to capture a variety of imagery that focused on developing their technical abilities that they have recently been taught in lessons.  Aperture, ISO, shutter-speed, white balance, composition and formal elements.  They explored angles and viewpoints, including portraiture and capturing moments / activities happening before them.  It proved to be a very culturally rich and colourful experience for the students, who had a very mature approach and became more confident at shooting photos throughout the day, even asking Souk workers and visitors to pose.  Students were also warmly welcomed to celebrate Diwali, demonstrating how wonderfully inclusive and welcoming our Dubai community is.

There has been a focus on both university applications and careers since September.  The Creative Arts faculty delivered a talk to those DESC students wanting to apply for an Arts, Design or Architecture career at university and we are proud of the large numbers progressing down this route.  A range of guest speakers have come into DESC to inform students about life after DESC in Creative and Design fields.  The University of the Arts, Arts University Bournemouth and The Chartered Institute of Building  have all visited us to work with our students,  sharing career pathways and future academic options.

Finally, we are incredibly proud of the creative pursuits of our students.  As a result, we are awarding Creator of the Month certificates within the faculty.  Congratulations to our first set of awardees: Ciara Crone, Coburn Bent, Leyla Triandafilou, Ashley O’Connor, FIndlay McKeand, Zhidi Huang, Areeta Ibrahim, Lily Rose Delhage, Mineshi Singh, Amelie Debattista, Joel Lear and Joanne Abraham.  This was followed by our November winners Phoebe Turner,  Brooke Fickler, Alfie Weber, Zoe Brock, Melissa Dhaler, Mercedes Flemming, Matilda Williams, Pietro Martini, Evie Copeland, Emilie Moriette-Sala, Jessica-Mae Neville and Joshua Schultz.  Please take a look at our Creators of the Month on the display in Earth House when you have the opportunity.

Over the next few months we look forward to sharing with you our events in Creative Arts. We are particularly excited about the upcoming London trip, launch of the House Photography exhibition, end of unit practical examinations (Year 11/12/13), Year 10 Creek trip and Design Technology pop-up show.
